Hello, everyone!
Do you like this story?
Welcome Everybody!!
I’m Hyejin Lee, the founder of “What’s up Korea”.
I’m so glad to introduce you to “What’s up Korea”.
<Changes for the better>
I remember one interview an anchor asked about South Korea on the streets of the United States of America. At that time President Daejung Kim was recently awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I assumed that at least half of the people interviewed would know about South Korea, unfortunately I was wrong, the majority of the Americans interviewed did not know about South Korea.
South Korea had a similar type of cultural awareness just a few short years ago. Has the view of cultural awareness changed in today’s society?
It’s not really difficult to see foreigners in South Korea these days.
If you go to famous tourist attractions in Seoul, South Korea like Myoungdong or Itaewon, half of the people you pass are foreigners. International marriages and the number of foreign workers are becoming more and more common. Additionally, many people out there like Korea because of Hallyu.
Although foreigners are more common in South Korea, are Koreans ready to accept this change?
The answer is very simple. “They are not ready.”
South Korea has been categorized into a racially homogeneous nation for a long time. For that reason, most older generations feel awkward living around different races. It is especially difficult for Koreans who have never had foreign friends, lived abroad, or learned about different cultures. Unfortunately, foreigners in South Korea sometimes feel like it is racism.
This inspired me to make a Facebook page, “What’s up Korea” to help both Koreans and foreigners to become friends
<What Do you REALLY know about Korea?>
In the beginning, I just posted little comments about what was happening in Korea but then I realized that there were a lot of people who wanted to experience the real South Korea. That is why I started hosting events around Seoul..
It has been blessing that a lot of people have participated in the events and established friendships with one another.
Now I would like to go one step further to help more foreigners learn about Korean culture and vice versa.
My goal is to make a company that has a good influence on the society..
