Bungeoppang
Do you like this story?
As the weather gets colder, that craving for piping hot food intensifies. What’s your favorite Korean street snack?
Baked Sweet Potatoes(gungoguma군고구마)
All of them are popular but when hunger strikes and no enough money, probably Bungeoppang is the first thing that pops up on your mind. You can buy 3 or 4 Bungeoppangs for 1000won (approximately $1)
Bungeoppang has been one of the most favorite winter snack foods in Korea for years and years.
In Korean, “Bungeo-붕어” means Carassius, a kind of fish and “ppang-빵” means bread. So some foreigners who are not familiar with Korean culture often say “it’s yucky!!” when they hear the meaning of it but you know, there’s no fish in it.
Bungeoppangs are made using an appliance similar to a waffle iron. The batter is poured into a fish-shaped mold, red bean paste is added, then more batter to encase the red bean paste. The mold is then closed, and roasted.
Once you take a bite, you will fallen love with either the crispy outer layer or the mildly sweet inner filling.
There are different kinds of Bungeoppangs came out these days.
Peanut chou-cream, cheese chili, sweet potato Bungeoppangs
Bungeoppang toast (소뿡이)
It's a Bungeoppang-shaped toast. You can choose different flavors such as pizza, bulgogi, potato, ddeokbokki, etc...
Luxury Bungeoppang
AZABU sells expensive Bungeoppangs. One Bungeoppang costs 2500won.
Roughly 5times more expensive than other Bungeoppangs..They even have
red bean shaved ice(팥빙수) with Bungeoppang. Even though it's expensive, it looks good.
Bungeoppang-shaped ice cream(붕어싸만코)
If you are hungry now, rustle up a couple 1000won bills and go find one of these Bungeoppangs.
