TeenInk = Life Lessions
Do you like this story?
Upon visiting the library, a magazine caught my eye. Larger than most, the TeenInk magazine is hard to miss.
Here are some of the articles that I found interesting (from most intriguing to the less interesting):
348 Dollars By Ilana Kruger, Englewood, NJ
I couldn't find this on the TeenInk website, but it is a great story outlining how a long girl found out that her father sent her mother a check for $348 twice a month. She wonders how her divorced parents came to that number. She wonders if that is what they judge her value to be. She wonders if they see her as an object. Then when it comes time to pay taxes, they argue about who gets to put her on their tax form, who gets the deduction.
I can relate to this. The wondering if your parents loved you, if you were a mistake. I guess my father sees me as having no value, because he has never sent any child support. My strong, single mother has had to work hard to support me.
All in the Head By Rora Oh, Camarillo, CA
A girl talks about how her father doesn't think that she needs to have a good education. She starts off with her story of how her father empties her bookbag to find a book on Anne Frank, "Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl," and he begins to scold her, asking if she thought that she was smarting than him, if she thought she was better than him. "“Books are a waste of money; books poison the mind,” he said."
This is another story that I can relate to personally. My parents may have been divorced when I was young, but my mother will sometimes tell me stories. One of them was the story of how they had argued about letting me go to daycare and then Kindergardin and how he had asked why a girl needed to get an education: Girls don't need to get an education; Girls only need to stay home and learn to clean and cook; That's all a girl is good for anyway. To this day, I absolutely abhor old-fashioned men with their close-minded ideas about the roles of women. I'm usually a calm person, but this is an issue that I go berserk over.
My Own Tiger Mother By Yen-Yen Gao, Indianapolis, IN
(Not sure about this. In the magazine it says it was written by Yen-Yen Gao, Indianapolis, IN, but on the website, it says that it is Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua, Indianapolis, IN)
My own mother is (happily) not a Tiger Mom. Her kind, easy-going nature kind of forbids it. She's more like a sister than anything else. Still, this is a nice piece about a girl who appreciates her Tiger Mother and all that she has done for her.
Sex: Would You Like Love With That? By Jonathan Bailey, Tempe, AZ
An interesting piece. Especially since my English class had just been talking about the role of Sex on college campuses.
