[EDITORIAL/RECAP] Super Junior completes their first "Super Show 4" concert in Seoul

Last night, I attended the first showing of Super Junior’s "Super Show 4." The night was filled with surprises, tons of energy, fireworks, shooting water, special light effects, and tears of joy and sadness (from the ELFs, not me, of course). The concert was around 4 hours long (good thing I ate a huge meal and used the restroom beforehand). There were some things missing, such as some of the members, a performance of my favorite Super Junior song "It’s You," and how to put it...a demographically diverse audience. I was most certainly one of a kind (read on and you’ll figure out why).

The K.R.Y. team and Sungmin (I should say K.R.Y.S.) all brought impressive vocals. Shindong and Eunhyuk were their usual goofy selves. Donghae wore his sunglasses at night, and Leeteuk and Siwon did not disappoint.

The show opened with the members performing a fanservice for the ELFs as the movie showed them floating in water shirtless.

The first song was "Superman," and I was disappointed that the first performance of the night was lip-synced. Then the boys performed "Opera," and to the surprise of many, they did their debut song "TWINS." Next was "A Man in Love," and what was special was that Kyuhyun kept popping out of the floor for his parts, which included some awkward thrusting.

One of my favorite performances of the night was the rock remix of "BONAMANA." It was a refreshing twist on the popular song. After "BONAMANA," Super Junior performed "You’re My Endless Love" and then "Oops," which featured Sulli, Victoria, and Amber of f(x). Heechul also appeared on a special screen for his part of the song. Afterwards, "Wonder Boy" and "Rokugo" were showcased. After a break, "Walkin" was performed with a special stage as Eunhyuk and Shindong flew around on bicycles and toy airplanes while Kyuhyun and Yesung were attacked by birds.

Henry started the round of solos with his rendition of Justin Bieber’s song, "Baby." I personally enjoyed him on the piano. Also, I felt bad for him, because many of the Korean ELFs turned off their glowsticks during his performance even though he has been with Super Junior over three years now. f(x)’s Amber also reappeared for Ludacris’ part in the song.

The members of Super Junior each picked solos for this "Super Show" to demonstrate a new side to themselves for the audience. Next up, Eunhyuk popped out of a crystal to do his original song, where he wanted the fans to say his name. Sungmin covered BMK’s "Oh! Peace," and did a stellar job on showcasing his vocal talent. Kyuhyun played the piano and harmonica and did my favorite Stevie Wonder song "Isn’t She Lovely." Although, I must critique him as his English pronunciation was off in parts as the last verse seemed to be slurred. All in all, I was still proud of my favorite member.

After Kyuhyun, Ryeowook started his provocative performance on the couch with his rendition of Maroon 5’s "Moves Like Jagger." Ryeowook totally shocked me because it seemed like his innocent image was a thing of the past.

Leeteuk performed Elvis Costello’s "She" from the movie "Notting Hill." After some piano and saxophone work, he then floated around the audience to throw the fangirls roses. Shindong came out in a bling bling jacket that could be seen from miles away. What was Shindong’s solo song? "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." Yes, that’s right. Leave it to Shindong to put his flavor on anything. I actually enjoyed it. The performance also featured a small snippet of a "Sorry, Sorry" remix.

With Heechul gone, the boys weren’t all forced to cross-dress this time. The 9 members then decided to form the Super Junior band and dress up like it was Halloween. Leeteuk went as WWE Hulk Hogan, Shindong was Britney Spears from her "Toxic" music video, Donghae was Charlie Chaplin, Kyuhyun was Steve Jobs, Yesung was the psycho-killer baby Chucky, Siwon was Superman, Ryeowook was Gollum from "Lord of the Rings," and Sungmin was Marilyn Monroe. Oh, and Eunhyuk was a crazy bird. The ELFs kept grabbing at Sungmin’s dress, so he was forced to hold it around him. Ryeowook and Yesung were just plain creepy. The boys performed "Good Friends" and "Pajama Party" in these outfits.

The boys then changed and came back with "Feels Good," which came off to me as if some of the members were bored performing that song. Then, the Korean version of "Perfection" was performed. After that, they did "A-Cha," which I felt was the loudest from the audience: so many screaming "Cha" everywhere.

"Mr. Simple" and "Don’t Don" (which was another one of my favorite performances) came equipped with special dance breaks. Zhou Mi came out with a cover of Kelly Clarkson’s "Because of You." I was nervous about him tackling a female song. He did an admirable job despite his slight mispronunciation of some words.

Afterwards, Yesung performed his solo "Kiss Me." Siwon did a duet with Chris Tomlin for the song "Your Grace is Enough." I felt like I was at church as Siwon told the audience that God remembers his children and that his grace is enough. I’m sure he probably converted some girls to Christianity last night.

Donghae closed out the solos with his original song, which I assumed was called "Oppa." Donghae donned an all-red suit while Eunhyuk appeared with a yellow one. Donghae wanted everyone to call him "Oppa," but I most certainly refused to participate in that chant.

Super Junior then performed "Storm," "Y," an a capella version of "Lovely Day," "You and I," and "Our Love" for their next set. After a tearful performance, the balloons were dropped and the boys bowed out.

The emotional rollercoaster began as the boys starred in the movie "The Sound of Super Junior," a parody of "The Sound of Music." Shindong was the female lead and Siwon was the love interest. The stage transitioned to a performance of the song "Do Re Mi" from the movie. Shindong did the waltz with Siwon while Sungmin was do, Eunhyuk was re, Donghae was mi, Leeteuk was fa, Yesung was sol, Ryeowook was la, Kyuhyun was ti. It turned those tears of sadness into tears of laughter for the ELFs.

The boys stayed in their "The Sound of Music" attire for "White Christmas" and "Dancing Out." The show closed and the audience screamed, "Encore!"

Super Junior came back with a remix of "U," "Sorry, Sorry," "Miracle," and finally closed the show with one of my favorite Super Junior songs, "Destiny." Sadly, Kyuhyun didn’t showcase his vocals as he was busy staring at my section of the audience as he studied the faces. He was probably taken back as he saw my face in the sapphire blue sea of Asian fangirls and probably thought, "Oh look, there’s a male and he’s not Korean!" The members greeted the fans while Eunhyuk played with the shooting water fountains. They each gave their closing remarks and teased Henry before exiting the stage.

This is one of Super Junior’s final performances on the Korean stage with the current line-up of members as the future of the group still remains uncertain after this tour. No "Super Show" is ever the same, and the boys began their world tour with a strong start. I very much enjoyed myself, and I recommend this concert if it comes to a city near you.
